Another good week of lessons, excellent work everyone!!
Posture. Our bodies were created to work best when everything is lined up. As instrumentalists the first thing to remember is to sit up tall; this is the best way to have the most air possible. If we hunch up or lean back in our chairs, not only will we run out of breath sooner, we will also not create the best sound. Clarinets, remember to hold your instrument bell just past your knees, think of a string tied between them and the clarinet rests just above that. Flutes, no resting your arm on your chair back! I know it's hard as you develop these new stances but you will thank me later. Trumpets, bells up!! And, everybody, both feet flat on the floor. We'll all be tired for a while but we are building muscle and discipline and we are getting stronger!. Practice Seniors Your 3 pieces plus your green book up to number 15. Long tones Scales 30 minutes every day Intermediate Blue book up to number 9 Trumpets, remember to practice with your mutes 30 minutes every day Beginners 10 minutes or more every day Concentrate on memorizing the fingerings for those first 4 notes

Something you may not know. I was privileged to take band when I was in middle school and Junior High bun in my tiny town I did not have the opportunity in High School. I had the blessing of 4 different band teacher, and a mom who made the sacrifices necessary to give me private lessons but there is so much I still do not know. For this reason I am so excited to sit under Mr. Squire (Harold) as he teaches this year. Not only has he completed his music degree, he also attended an award winning music program at Heritage Christian academy. This means he has the knowledge and the experience to back it up. I learn something every week!
Senior Band Today we talked about intervals. Take a few minutes and Google Songs to remember intervals. Trust me, this is knowledge that will help. Flutes - remember to practice LONG TONES - good for all of us, but essential for flutes Trumpets- remember to practice how you attack a note - Mr. Squire will likely write more about that and double tonguing later. You should be practicing a minimum of 30 minutes per day Intermediate Band We got to page 7 today - we have been moving quickly. Trumpets - You now need a straight mute. If you want to purchase through us let us know. You should be practicing a minimum of 20 minutes per day. Beginner Band You may work up to number 14. You should be practicing 10 minutes per day. Concentrate on posture, holding your instrument correctly and working towards a good sound. Just for fun! https://flavoreeds.com/about/ -flavoured reeds Sept 5, 12, 19, 26

The Homeschool band meets on Tuesdays at the Parkdale Grace Fellowship Church 2608–1 Ave NW. Senior Band (Students with 2 or more years Experience) meets from 12:30 till 1:30 Intermediate Band (1 or more years experience) meets from 1:30 till 2:30 Beginner Band meets from 2:30 till 3:30. Recommended youngest age is 10 or grade 4. We begin each year on the Tuesday following the Long Weekend in September, and strive to complete lessons before the May long weekend. The focus of this group is to provide a fun musical experience. Students achieve a high level of satisfaction when they only know a few notes and already the group can create harmony. Please note this is a band program that means wind instruments – flute, trumpet, clarinet etc. There will be approximately 30 lessons with a minimum of 2 concerts throughout the year. Students will learn and perform a variety of music including sacred, pop and classical. We will also study basic theory. Parents are invited to participate at no extra charge. Students in Senior band are welcome to sit in on the Intermediate and Beginner bands and learn an additional instrument, also at no extra charge. Fees are 250$ per student per year. Students must provide their own instruments. St John’s Music and Long and McQuade Music provide reasonable rental and rent to own fees. The Band program used is Standard of Excellence.
